A Letter to “The Aquarian Theosophist”
Martha Vieira
Dear Editor,
I have been a theosophy student for almost five years, but it was only in the last months that I started to get a wider view of the international Theosophical Movement. I attend a Brazilian theosophical e-group – named Ser Atento, which means “being attentive” , and among us there are some dedicated students who share a growing interest in Theosophy and its relation to the present and future scenario of our world and civilization. I believe this has boosted our studies of the original teachings of HPB, William Judge, Robert Crosbie and the Mahatma Letters. Together these texts are being constantly discussed among our group, and give us adequate tools to deal with the critical challenges brought up by the 21th century world.
Preparing and getting prepared for the future world was a feature of the early Theosophical Movement that seems to have worn out some of its impulse in the last decade. With no greater look into the future, the interest for events and teachings from the past also diminish. The highly sophisticated and evolved instructions of the Masters of Wisdom for the coming centuries may be forgotten among unimportant but agreeable dreams of a pure but naïve spirituality, while our world claims for people who may properly unite matter and spirit, science and religion, past and future. Theosophy can teach us that, and the writings of these great instructors are all here, to be read, discussed and put into action today. Once one starts to practice this, a new approach to our present era dilemmas arise. The Theosophy student perceives he/she treads on a firm ground, and can effectively answer the world’s demands for sense and meaning. His/her attitude sparks curiosity about the kind of wisdom that gives someone that calm and peaceful drive for life. Interest on Theosophy naturally grows.
Also, there are unsolved events from the past that still afflict the Theosophical Movement. The treason suffered by HPB and W. Judge created a karmic division in the movement, which still casts its shadow on every sincere inquirer of truth that approaches theosophical teachings. It is clear for me that the 21st century public deserves access to the truth concerning the theosophical pioneers, and the ULT efforts to preserve their original texts, untouched by any kind of distortion, are commendable and show evident results today. I understand that more and more must be done to clear those unfortunate mistakes from the past, liberating the authentic and original theosophical teachings to adequately help humanity out of its materialistic deadlock. By doing so, the 21st century student of theosophy guarantees the growth of wisdom and love for truth that has always pushed the sincere theosophist ahead on the path, while effectively opposing the dark forces that hindered the movement in the late 1800's - which are still around and strong enough to keep acting in the same direction as then, and rather succeeding on it.
I finish with a quote from the text “The Coming of a New Cycle” by Carlos Cardoso Aveline (available at the blog http://www.esoteric-philosophy.com):
“At the first decade of the 21st century, there remains a collective nucleus of deep, heartfelt and active loyalty to Universal Truth and to Altruism – that is, to Theosophy. It is spread over several countries and languages. How big is that nucleus is another question, and this is perhaps of secondary importance. The key factor from the viewpoint of esoteric philosophy is the actual existence of this subtle Territory of Truth and Compassion, which remains as a living process inside the wider, common karma of mankind.
Big or small, this umbrella of brotherhood is directly connected – as an active factor at a causal level – to the destiny of our civilization in the years and decades to come. We may have more challenges and opportunities in front of us than we can easily see and identify. As Karma accelerates, we are invited to do what we can to improve such a nucleus of broad mutual understanding and solidarity.”
Fraternally yours, Martha Vieira
