THE CHANGING OF THE TIDE

New Winds Can Change The
Way One Sees the Ocean of Karma

Carlos Cardoso Aveline

Every Ocean has a System of Tides

The soul’s process of probation in its loyalty or otherwise to its own higher self has been well investigated in William Shakespeare’s plays.

In order to better understand the often tumultuous history of the theosophical movement, one must “read” such a history from the viewpoint of the probationary challenges.  Therefore the path must be seen as a dangerous process, for treason is a possibility, especially for lukewarm souls, once they are submitted to strong tests.

There have been a few real traitors in the movement since 1875.  This happens to give the movement - and each theosophist - a reasonable amount of probationary events, so that his march forward can be duly tested and thus acquire the necessary firmness.

While facing such challenges, it is worthwhile to carefully observe the behavior of traitors and judases.

[Of course, if one prefers to elude these strong direct words used by both the Masters and H.P.Blavatsky, one can always refer to these individuals as “those whose loyalty often seems to be absent”.]

By calmly observing the pattern of action followed by judases, one can see and understand a few things which are rather useful to know. We have some key lessons to learn from the crises and opportunities that un-ethical and un-truthful individuals create in the movement.

It is, of course, the loyal students who can stand firm, face difficulties, and actively defend their own ideals.  Only loyal students can actually preserve the source of the Teachings which are studied by all.

But why, exactly, are these students able to do that?

One answer is - because loyal people have a wide and long-term view. This is the reason why they can take short term suffering. They have confidence in the Law. They can afford acting with altruism. They know that they can lose nothing by renouncing and giving up things which belong to the lower realms of reality.

Individuals having “a difficulty to be loyal”, on the other hand, have short-term minds. They can only see small things. They look for immediate rewards - and they think they are very clever for that.

What happens then in a historical perspective to the movement’s evolution, as it faces the paradox and the test of Loyalty to that which is Higher?

Ethical students can’t teach loyalty to those who are unable to have a long-term vision of Life, or who can’t understand the actual Dynamics of the One Law.  Some of the individuals who lack this understanding prefer to seek immediate rewards for their own blind and self-defeating efforts after happiness. Each one must be responsible for his or her own choices.

A lasting loyalty to Ethics always emerges from Antahkarana - the bridge between higher self and lower self. And the strengthening of Antahkarana can only occur from within, not from the outside world.

What the more experienced students can and must do is to mark the way for those who have less experience of inner things and challenges.

They must show everyone that it is not worthwhile -  for people whose sense of right and wrong is lukewarm - to put into practice their inclination to abandon  Ethics.

Thus true students help establishing the general karmic tide of events. It’s true that they are never too numerous.  H. P. Blavatsky called them “The Few”.  Yet they can do their job, in spite of all difficulties, and they learn valuable lessons from every obstacle along the path.

Each time the teachers and the teaching are firmly defended, many a “disloyal people” who thought he would gain this or that short term advantage by attacking in a disguised way the Source of Sacred Learning tends to gradually change his mind, and to adapt himself to the new winds.  This adaptation, of course, is short term.  It is blind. Vigilance is therefore necessary at all times.

Having said that, let’s look at the problem from another perspective.

One might argue that “treason” can only happen as long as the karmic tides are difficult enough to turn some weaker souls unable to stand on their own feet.   And that is understandable.

From that point of view, there are no traitors really.  Traitors are then seen as only weak and blind souls trying to convince themselves - and trying to convince others - that they are clever.  This is a childish goal indeed. Still, it is a dangerous process, and it cannot be accepted.

Since the end of the first decade in the 21st century, some can see already that the karmic tide is starting to change for the better, and that some “floating objects” are getting ready to adapt their outer behavior to new winds and to new oceanic currents, which will be more favourable and less difficult to sincere truth-seekers.

This is good for such “floating objects”, in the short term. It is also good for them in the longer term. In fact, this is good for everyone.

And - it is the duty of loyal students who happen to have some degree of discernment to help put before souls opportunities to enter the good Path, and to help reduce opportunities for them to “learn” disloyalty or “unlearn” Ethics.

This must be done in an open, transparent way. For there will always be those who can see and understand the several layers of meaning present in this approach.
